Does the oil pump have to be timed?
If your balance shafts have been properly removed, the oil pump sprocket does not need to be timed. All your doing is timing the balance shaft if its there, if there is no shaft, it no longer needs to be timed.
How do you rotate an oil pump shaft?
You need to use a long screwdriver to turn the pump shaft to line up with the slot in the dist. as your facing the firewall you need to turn the dist. a slight bit counter clockwise as it drops down it will rotate clockwise as the dist gear meshes with the cam gear.
How do you adjust a distributor without a timing light?
to set your base timing without a light, you just turn the motor over in it’s normal direction of rotation until the mark lines up with where you want it.. loosen up the distributor and hook up a spare spark plug to the #1 plug wire.. turn the distributor until it sparks.. tighten down the distributor..
What happens if your distributor timing is off?
When any changes are made to the engine of a car, the ignition timing is adjusted accordingly. If not, you could experience several problems with your engine with improper ignition timing like knocking, hard to start, increase fuel usage, overheating, and reduced power.
Does the distributor drive the oil pump?
Second, in a wet-sump engine, the oil pump is driven off the distributor shaft. If you are racing a hardened flat-tappet camshaft, an iron distributor gear should be fine, but if you are racing a roller cam, you need to go with a bronze gear.
What should ignition timing be at idle?
Most engines have between 5-20 degrees of ignition advance at idle. This is referred to as initial timing.
Can you check timing without a timing light?
to set your base timing without a light, you just turn the motor over in it’s normal direction of rotation until the mark lines up with where you want it.. loosen up the distributor and hook up a spare spark plug to the #1 plug wire.. turn the distributor until it sparks..
How do you install a distributor on an oil pump?
To engage the oil pump drive, put very light pressure on the top of the distributor housing and rotate the engine clockwise until the distributor drops into place on the manifold. Once the distributor drops in, install the distributor hold-down clamp and tighten it slightly. (Image/Jeff Smith)
How to install a distributor and set initial timing?
We like to place each wire on the spark plug and route them to the distributor first. Then we measure each plug wire separately allowing room to twist the distributor to set final timing and then crimp the HEI male terminal on the wire. We place a small amount of the supplied lube in the boot to make it easier to push onto the wire.
Which is the correct direction for distributor cap?
Before we can place the wires in the distributor cap, the first thing we need to know is which direction the rotor turns. For our Chevrolet engine you’ll note that the rotor turns clockwise. Small- and big-block Fords turn counter-clockwise.
How can I tell the direction of a vacuum advance distributor?
Tech Tip: One quick way to tell on any vacuum advance style distributor is to lay your hand parallel with the vacuum advance canister and then curl your fingers inward toward the middle of the distributor body. The direction your fingers point is the direction of rotor movement.
